Robert Hotung
Sir Robert Ho Tung Bosman, KBE (22 December 1862 – 26 April 1956), better known as Sir Robert Hotung, was an influential Hong Kong businessman and philanthropist in British Hong Kong. Known as "the grand old man of Hong Kong",〔Leader (28 January 2011). "Ho Tung villa highlights lack of heritage strategy", ''South China Morning Post''〕 Hotung was knighted in 1915 and 1955.
It has often been incorrectly claimed that in 1906 he was the "first Chinese person to be allowed to live on Victoria Peak"; however, the relevant law only applied to tenants. Ho Tung owned his own houses and so needed no such permission and, of course, he was as much European as he was Chinese.

He was a Eurasian, his father was Charles Henry Maurice Bosman (1839–1892), of Dutch and Jewish ancestry,〔http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2012/11/sir-robert-ho-tung-1862-1956.html〕〔Courtauld, Caroline & Holdsworth, May 1997, ''The Hong Kong Story''. Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-590353-6〕 while his mother was Sze Tai(施娣),〔sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2012/11/sir-robert-ho-tung-1862-1956.html〕 a Han Chinese woman of Bao'an (present-day Shenzhen) heritage, on D'Aguilar Street. His father was a merchant who had his own company, Bosman and Co., was part owner of the Hong Kong Hotel which opened in 1868, and a director of the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Company. By 1869, Charles Bosman was also the Dutch Consul, running his own marine insurance business with important clients that included the British-owned trading conglomerate Jardine, Matheson & Co.〔(Bosman – Ho Tung ), Gwulo, 21 September 2010〕 He later left for England, where he became naturalised in 1888.〔(ALIENS 1888 1889 SURNAME A B C ), missing-ancestors.com. When Robert Ho Tung Bosman travelled, he carried a certificate from the Governor of Hong Kong stating that his father was Dutch.
